Blessed are they
who have the gift of making friends,
for it is one of God's greatest gifts.
It involves many things,
but above all
the power of going out of one's self
and appreciating what is noble
and loving in another. 1
Life is partly what we make it,
and partly what is made
by the friends whom we choose. 2
Two friends were walking through the desert.
During some point of the journey,
they had an argument;
and one friend slapped the other one in the face. 3
True friendship
is never serene. 4
The one who got slapped was hurt,
but without saying anything,
wrote in the sand:
”Today my best friend slapped me in the face.”

They kept on walking, until they found an oasis,
where they decided to take a bath.
The one who had been slapped
got stuck in the mire and started drowning,
but his friend saved him.
After he recovered from the near-drowning,
he wrote on a stone:
”Today my best friend saved my life". 3
The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked,
"After I hurt you,
you wrote in the sand and now,
you write on a stone, why?" 3
Friendship with oneself is all-important
because without it
one cannot be friends
with anyone else in the world. 5
His friend replied,
"When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand,
where winds of forgiveness can erase it away.
But, when someone does something good for us,
we must engrave it in stone
where no wind can ever erase it." 3
The essence of true friends
is to make allowances
for another's little lapses. 6
Learn to write your hurts in the sand
and to carve your benefits in stone. 3
Friendship is the inexpressible comfort
of feeling safe with a person,
having neither to weigh thoughts
nor measure words. 7
A friend is someone who understands your past,
believes in your future,
and accepts you just the way you are.
People need people and friends need friends
And we all need love for a full life depends
Not on vast riches or great acclaim
Not on success or on worldly fame
But just in knowing that someone cares
And holds us close in their thoughts and prayers 8
We need not
think alike
to love alike. 9
For only the knowledge that we're understood
Makes everyday living feel wonderfully good
And we rob ourselves of life's greatest need
When we 'lock up our hearts' and fail to heed
The outstretched hand reaching to find
A kindred spirit whose heart and mind
Are lonely and longing to somehow share
Our joys and sorrows and to make us aware
That life's completeness and richness depends
On the things we share with our
loved ones and friends. 8
True happiness consists not
in the multitude of friends,
but in their worth and value. 10

It takes more than caring
To be a real friend;
The nature of friendship;
Requires a blend
Of warmest compassion
And love deep and true
To reach and to comfort
The way that you do.
Because I can see
That your kind of friendship
Is priceless to me. 11
Do not mistake
acquaintanceship
for friendship.
Life is sweet because of the friends we have made
And the things which in common we share;
We want to live on, not because of ourselves,
But because of the ones who would care. 12
The friendship that can cease
has never been real. 13
It's living and doing for somebody else
On that - all of life's splendor depends,
And the joy of it all, when we count it all up,
Is found in the making of friends. 12
I can trust my friends.
These people force me to examine,
encourage me to grow. 14
Greater love has no-one than this,
that s/He lay down hir* life for hir friends. 15
Our road will be smooth and untroubled,
no matter what care life may send,
if we travel the pathway together
and walk side by side with a friend. 16
It takes a long time
to grow an old friend. 17
The ultimate lesson all of us
have to learn is unconditional love;
which includes not only others,
but ourselves as well. 18
A real friend
is one who walks in
when the rest of the world walks out. 19
Do not value the things
you have in your life,
but value who
you have in your life.
A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart
and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words.
Fate chooses your relations,
you choose your friends. 20
