New Year
There is always a lot of talk this time of year related to "new beginnings" and
"resolutions".

Why?
Were people that much out of control over their lives?
And why would they think they had suddenly acquired the control they didn’t have
earlier?
Hard questions; with no easy answers.

If
you are considering making resolutions. . . . some thoughts. . .

What is causing the desire of new beginnings?
Why do you want to go in a new direction?

Perhaps. . . .
Life's situations may have changed recently, providing the insight that
they have brought the opportunity for new beginning.
This would provide a cause for new resolutions - a new direction.

I encourage you to try to answer those questions in the coming days.

What is it that is drawing you towards change?

Not everyone feels this drawing.

Some feel the continuation of the mundane.
That feeling of "here we are again."

If you find yourself there do not worry.

Ask questions like:

Does anything need to change?
Am I at peace with my life and who I am?

As you reflect, this prayer may be of help:

Nobody can go back and start a new beginning,
but anyone can start today and make a new ending.“

Today is the first day of January, the month named after the Roman god Janus: god of
gates and doors (ianua), beginnings and endings, sunset and sunrise, and hence represented
with a double-faced head, each looking in opposite directions; one forward, one backward.
He was considered especially important at the beginnings of important events in a person's
life. Janus also represents the transition between primitive life and civilization, between
the countryside and the city, peace and war, and the growing-up of young people.

Originally one face was bearded while the other was not (probably a symbol of the sun and
the moon). Later both faces were bearded. In his right hand he holds a key. Sometimes
the double image is one of a man and a woman looking in opposite directions.
May God make your year a happy one!

Not by shielding you from all sorrows and pain,
But by strengthening you to bear it, as it comes;

Not by making your path easy,
But by making you sturdy to travel any path;

Not by taking hardships from you,
But by taking fear from your heart;

Not by granting you unbroken sunshine,
But by keeping your face bright, even in the shadows;

Not by making your life always pleasant,
But by showing you when people and their causes need you most,
and by making you anxious to be there to help.

God’s love, peace, hope and joy to you for the year ahead.
~Saint Thomas Becket (Appleseeds)
