The wheel of the year has made another full turn,
the cycle continues and a new rotation begins.
“And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:
Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”
And he replied: “Go out into the darkness
and put your hand into the hand of the Creator.
That shall be to you better than light,
and safer than a known way.” 1
Welcoming the new year is one of the oldest
and gayest customs celebrated the world over.
New Year's Day is a time for entertaining,
visiting, and in many places,
gift-giving.
Since it marks the beginning of the year, New Year's Day
is a good time to make New Year's resolutions (like exercising) –
and resolve to do better in the year just beginning
than you did in the year just ended (like exercising).
s/He who breaks a resolution is a weakling; s/He who makes one is a fool. 2
New Year's Resolution
Outside my window a new year I see,
And I can determine what kind of year it will be.
It can be busy and productive and funny,
Or boring, and cold ~~ but I'll make it sunny.
My own state of mind is a determining key
For I am the person that I choose to be.
I can be creative with my crafts on the shelf,
And think more of others than I do of myself.
I can enjoy what I do and make it fun
Rather than gripe and unload on someone.
I can be patient with others less driven
And encourage them to use their talents given.
I'll have faith in myself, what I'll see, what I'll hear;
And I personally intend to make the best of this year! 3
The outgoing year is often represented by an elderly man known as Father Time.
The new year is represented by a baby known as Baby New Year.
New Year's Day is a time for entertaining,
and visiting, family and friends,
a time of reunion and thanksgiving.
For many people it is also a time
to reflect on the past and envision a future . . .
Recipe For A Happy New Year
To leave the old with a burst of song
To recall the right and forgive the wrong;
To forget the thing that binds you fast
To the vain regrets of the year that's past;
To have the strength to let go your hold
Of the not worthwhile of the days grown old,
To dare to go forth with a purpose true,
To the unknown task of the year that's new;
To help your brother along the road
To do his work and lift his load;
To add your gift to the world's good cheer,
Is to have and to give a Happy New Year. 4

Traditional New Year's Toast
Here's to the bright New Year
And a fond farewell to the old;
Here's to the things that are yet to come
"Auld Lang Syne" (The Good Old Days) is a song
traditionally sung at midnight when horns are blown,
confetti is thrown, and a general party atmosphere
is created to ring in the New Year with happiness.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?
And here's a hand, my trusty friend
And gie's a hand o' thine
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne
When you're lonely, I wish you Love!
When you're down, I wish you Joy!
When you're troubled, I wish you Peace!
When things seem empty, I wish you Hope!
Have a Happy New Year! 5
As the new year blossoms,
may the journey of your life be fragrant
with new opportunities,
your days be bright with new hopes
and your heart be happy with love!
Happy New Year! 6
