| For many years, this devoted husband and father owned and worked on his own specialty tulip farm in Andijk, NH, Netherlands. He and his family moved to Canada in 1952, settling in the Belleville, Ontario area (Holloway, just north of Foxboro). There he rented a farm and began the process of starting a dairy farm - it was a process of rebuilding: (immigration had used up almost all their money) and Klaas worked as a day-labourer in Belleville (McFarlane-Gendron) while Tena and young Klaas at first managed the farm during the day-time. In time, Klaas purchased his own farm in West Huntington, Ontario (1961) which by then had grown into a large operation. All the children were soon full-grown, and before long, grand-children arrived on the scene. At the time of his death he left behind his wife, Tena, children Klaas, Greta, Gina, Ann, Lida, Arthur, brother Arie and sister Alie (both since deceased) of Andijk, NH, Netherlands, and several grandchildren. Klaas was highly respected as a hard worker and successful farmer. Perhaps he is most remembered for his absolute honesty: once he had given his word, there was no going back on it. His "motto" was: "A man's word is his bond. And the measure of a man is how he keeps his word". Note: this is Fr. Klaas's father not me, Fr. Klaas. My siblings are developing a more detailed text. |
